Brest, Not So Far West

A Study Trip for IDHEAL

Does the Breton particularism foster a less market-driven approach to its human, heritage, and geographic assets? From decentralization by nature to metropolization by culture (of autonomy), the trip explored how this “common house” — and its constellation of satellites — confronts or resists global phenomena such as the financialization of housing, the decline of city centers, and the post-Covid rise of prices. How does a city that fought until the late 1990s against the effects of urban shrinkage now manage this sudden revival of interest? How can Brest draw on its alternative dynamics — the same ones that have long fueled its countercultural identity — to rethink and share public space differently, in a metropolis both “far west” and yet at the heart of the storm? This study trip conceived by AHA for the IDHEAL workshops culminates in a public discussion at the University of Western Brittany, moderated by Annabelle Hagmann.
