Touring the Houses of Architecture

This book is about architecture centers and is aimed at the general public. Examining the diverse activities of these centers, this richly documented work identifies six types of actions, or rather three families of two, based on the concepts of territory, narrative, and awareness. Investing in the territory through residencies or walks; developing collective narratives in exhibitions or through film programming; forging judgment through educational activities or awards that promote bold projects: such is the strength of the Maisons de l'architecture. And such is their relevance, too, that guest authors put into perspective, shifting each of these actions into an artistic, sociological, or political field. For they cannot escape it. But the most current of the actions, perhaps the most intangible, is the seventh, the collective action embodied by the Network of Architecture Houses. A photographer illustrates the diversity of their incarnations in a “tour de France of architecture centers,” confirming their richness and proximity to all audiences. And so the circle is complete.
