Negotiated urbanism has become something of a buzzword — but who really knows what it means? As it gradually takes shape, the Bassins à flot project has become one of the defining symbols of Bordeaux’s urban laboratory, demonstrating that it is possible to make the city differently — by relying on collective intelligence and on new ways of doing that break from conventional planning models. The Atelier des Bassins à flot, proposed and established by architect and urban planner Nicolas Michelin (ANMA), embodies this new approach: a unique tool entirely dedicated to the co-construction of a neighborhood that combines territorial identity with urban and architectural quality. This publication reveals the “hard drive” behind one of France’s most experimental urban projects, and explains how — and why — urbanism can and must be negotiated.
