Founded by landscape architect Jean-Marc Gaulier, Urbicus is now led by four young partners — Rudy Blanc, Thomas Boisdet, Florian Larcher, and Lucie Rivault. Coming from backgrounds in landscape architecture, urbanism, engineering, and architecture, they continue the story of an agency created nearly thirty years ago, whose trajectory perfectly aligns with their shared convictions. First, to de-hierarchize approaches: committed to hybridity, Urbicus conceives landscape as a place of encounter and synthesis, a space for co-production and dialogue among users, residents, and stakeholders. Next, to deconstruct the primacy of the form over the sensorial, of the large scale over the small, of the built over the living.
Practicing attention, diagnosis, and repair, the office maintains a close relationship with its project sites and their inhabitants, with offices in Saint-Malo, Toulouse, Versailles, and now Paris, remaining close to the realities of a country that is both unified and diverse. Finally, Urbicus approaches geography and history’s long temporal movements with as much care as it gives to the realities of current uses and challenges. Pragmatic in its outlook, Urbicus sees landscape as the living, flexible framework of territories, and the city as a field of ongoing practice, one that must be steered to unlock latent potentials.
From shifting coastlines and infrastructures, to transitional territories, renewing neighborhoods, public spaces of parks, streets, and squares, to heritage and built transformations — Urbicus’s interventions are multiscalar, reconnecting territorial vision with lived experience. With over 400 projects across France, Urbicus’s works “impose neither on the landscape nor on people.” Spectacularly delicate, these grafts demonstrate a profound understanding of the living world and of urban flows, placing landscape at the service of a social and solidaristic ecology.
