The SOL office seized the opportunity presented by the rehabilitation of a school complex in the working-class Jean Macé neighborhood of Trappes to deconstruct the stereotypes often associated with urban renewal and to reinvent architectural practice by placing the focus on pedagogy, emancipation, and, of course, ecology. From a school project to a project-as-school, the transformation led by Hélène Reinhard stands as an example of how the renewal of an educational institution can serve as a vehicle for social transformation. Recognized for her commitment to social inclusion and the democratization of the city, Hélène Reinhard embodies a new generation of architects who approach architecture as a social project—one that reflects on the rightful place of every individual, selects materials for their contextual relevance and ecological footprint, values craftsmanship and implementation, and ultimately conceives city-making as a genuinely collective practice.
