Rehabilitation of the Salève cable car station

Devaux & Devaux gain perspective on heritage issues

The Salève cable car, a masterpiece by Swiss architect Maurice Braillard (1879-1965), has remained unfinished since its construction in 1932. It serves as a key infrastructure for accessing a sought-after panorama overlooking Lake Geneva without damaging the mountain. The rehabilitation led by Devaux & Devaux focuses on enhancing this 20th-century monument and, more broadly, preserving a living heritage of the 21st century: the mountain.

Because more and more people will choose the mountains for cooler and decarbonized summer vacations. Claudia and David Devaux's project re-aligns the cable car with the present: it adapts the existing site to rediscovered uses (climbing, hiking, paragliding), while offering tools for understanding and appreciating the natural heritage through exhibition spaces, an esplanade, and a panoramic terrace.

To discover the new upper station of the Salève cable car and gain insight into transition issues in mountainous areas, AHA proposdes a press hike at Mont-Salève, France, on Friday, June 28th, with the architects.
