Brest, Not So Far West
IDHEAL Study Trip
This year, Brest is the destination for the study trip organized by AHA for the IDHEAL workshops. Does Breton particularism lead to a less market-driven approach to its human, heritage, and geographical assets compared to elsewhere? From decentralization by nature to metropolitanization by culture (of autonomy), we will observe how the “common house” (and its galaxy of satellites) faces or resists global phenomena such as the financialization of housing, the decline in city center attractiveness, and the post-Covid rise in costs. How does a city that fought until the late 1990s against the decline of a shrinking urban area now respond to this sudden surge in interest? How can we leverage alternative dynamics (those that fuel Brest's counter-culture) to inhabit and share the public space of a metropolis that is far to the West yet still in the eye of the storm? This investigation with a sea view will lead to a public meeting at the University of Western Brittany, moderated by Annabelle Hagmann. Housing: a private matter or a public issue? Guess!
